"This hike, close to Santa Fe, is suitable for children, well shaded, and a good introduction to the mountain terrain, fir-aspen belt vegetation, and wildflowers of this elevation in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The trailhead is located in newly renovated Santa Fe National Forest’s Black Canyon Campground, where half of the campsites can be reserved. Camping here is a real treat!"

Great hike...shaded trail with lots of Aspens. Note that the trail guide says the trail head is at Camp 4; it's actually at Camp 24. It is an easy hike...but if you're not in shape, expect to take lots of breaks along the way!

This trail was a lot of fun. Shady with lots of little creeks running through the trail. It has a steep drop off in areas, which may not be great for the younger kids. My 4 year old however had a great time but we did have to keep an eye out as there were narrow paths on parts of the hike. You can go see a small water fall on this hike or veer off to a longer hike up the mountain. We did the waterfall hike.. which is not a loop.. and you end up turning around and walking back the same path you came up. Saw about 5 people on the hike.. one other kid and a few dogs.. all on leashes.

This trail -- and the campground around it -- is closed right now. A ranger directed us to the Borrega Trail as an alternate. It was really nice. About a 3 mile loop with not-too-strenuous grades, mature forests, and lots of friendly hikers, joggers, and dogs.
