El Valle South Ramble

El Valle South Ramble Professional Review and Guide

"New Mexico Route 3 is a quiet, rural, and historic road in the southern part of what locals refer to as El Valle, and it is worth a day trip or overnighter if you aren’t afraid of dogs. The ride follows the course of the Pecos River, starting at a funky cafe, passing a winery with a tasting room in an old restored farmhouse, and ending at a state park with neat, adobe-style shelters for camping.

You will ride through juniper-pinon hills and alongside red sandstone bluffs as you leave and come back to the banks of the river several times. In addition, the route passes through several old Spanish villages with historic churches. Terrain: Gentle descent and easy return climb along the Pecos River-plus a few rollers."

Its a really fun ride as you weave with the Pecos River towards Villanueva State Park. Sad Cafe has RENAMED to La Risa Cafe, so make sure you're aware of that so you don't go venturing past it looking for that waypoint. Got chased by a few dogs between mile marker 65 and the town of Villanueva, but i'm sure they just liked the chase and didn't actually have bad intentions. The chickens, ducks, and roosters along the ride were a pleasant surprise! The hills aren't too terrible (save one or two) and the vistas are gorgeous and the state park is a very nice attraction with very minimal car, pedestrian, or other cyclist traffic. Would and will do again!
