Continental Divide Trail, San Luis Mesa Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The rangelands of the Rio Puerco watershed are a lonesome landscape that readily displays the paradox of the importance of water in shaping the land in the arid Southwest. Deeply incised arroyos fragment the terrain into thousands of isolated islands of rock.

Sheer walls of sandstone border the islands and stretch on for miles. Dark, almost sinister volcanic necks—the throats of dead volcanoes now exposed by erosion of the softer sandstone—punctuate the scene. It is an eerie land that holds many beautiful secrets."
