Pecos River Pecos to Cowles

Pecos River: Pecos to Cowles Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A 19-mile drive from the town of Pecos to the headwaters of the Pecos River in the high Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The route follows the Pecos River into the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, a southern extension of the Colorado Rockies. The drive starts in the historic village of Pecos and ends in high mountains forested with fir, aspen, pine, and spruce. Pecos National Historical Park, about two miles south of Pecos, preserves and interprets the historical roots of the area. The hulking adobe ruins of the abandoned Spanish mission in the park mark the site of one of the most important pueblos in early New Mexico.

Special attractions: Pecos National Historical Park, Pecos Wilderness, Santa Fe National Forest, hiking, camping, fishing, and fall color. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."
