Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

Laurence Parent
"A day hike through scattered pines and enormous alligator junipers below the rugged crags of the Organ Needles. The trail follows a broad loop around a drainage basin at the base of Rabbit Ears and several of the other Needles. From the trailhead, the well-constructed trail climbs steadily uphill through patchy oak-juniper woodland. Within about 0.2 mile, the trail hits the loop. Go right. Within 50 yards a trail forks off to the right and drops back down to another trailhead in the campground. Continue to climb to the left up a steady grade. Dogs are not allowed."

This trail was beautiful but challenging for me as someone who doesn’t hike or workout regularly. I went with family and we all made it!! Great experience and felt good to finish something difficult.

Wonderful moderate trail with great views of the Organ Mountains and Tularosa valley. Nice wildflowers during the growing season.

We got up early to enjoy this beautiful hike and the lighting and temperature were perfect. The trail starts in the desert but soon becomes forested with nice shade. It is a nice steady, subtle climb and the views of the mountains are gorgeous!
