This national monument has several very good mission ruins and great trails that go through the mission grounds.

Walking around this site is a spiritual experience. In the silence you can imagine a village of families living, eating, raising crops and animals. The trail is an easy walk, there is a visitor’s center to learn the history. It’s dog friendly (leased, bring poop bags) and there are picnic tables so you can sit under trees and enjoy snacks or your lunch. Plan for a few hours so you can sink into the stillness and just breathe.

A very easy and rewarding day trip about an hour outside of Albuquerque. The ruins are picturesque. See for yourself! There is a ranger station with the usual services and it is an easy hike. Bring the family young and old. Magnificent picnic grounds under ginormous cottonwoods with a beautiful view of the ruins. For photographers, arrive early AM when the sun is on the front of the old church. I spotted several rattlesnakes (off the trail) by the 'Spanish Corral' so be careful. Incorporate this into a longer driving day trip of all 3 Salinas Pueblo ruins (Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument Tijeras to Gran Quivira)
