Morphy Lake State Park

Morphy Lake State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Beautiful Morphy Lake State Park is one of the best primitive tent-camping parks in New Mexico. Morphy Lake was accessible only by four-wheel drive for many years, but the road is now paved; however, it remains extremely steep in parts, with twists and turns, and is not for the faint of heart.

Morphy Lake is open year-round for ice fishing, but the campground is only open April 1 to November 1. Snow begins to fall as early as October, and winter storms are possible through late April. No snow removal is performed on his road. Off-season campers and anglers are encouraged to call ahead for road and weather conditions."

The guide is right. Morphy Lake State Park is a great place to tent camp. It's quiet, beautiful and there are nice hiking trails that begin at the campground. The easy hike to start the day is to round the lake and gape at the Sangre de Cristo mountains towering to the west.
