Black Range Crest

Black Range Crest Professional Review and Guide

"A long day hike (with shuttle) with great views along part of the crest of the Black Range.

This hike follows a beautifully scenic stretch of the crest of the Black Range along the edge of the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, from the McKnight Road (FR 152) to NM 152. In October the aspens can be quite beautiful along this route. Both NM 152 and FR 152 use the same route number, but they are different roads; don’t confuse them. This hike can be combined with the Hillsboro Peak hike for a longer trek."

Hiked this section from McKnight to Emory Pass back in 2014. It was in decent shape with sections that were overgrown with aspen and locust. I hike the section from Emory Pass to Hillsboro Peak multiple times each year. We clear that trail every year in the spring and we have had it worked by trail crews twice since the Silver Fire. It’s a great trail and if you want to get away from people, the section from Hillsboro to McKnight has very little use.
