Jemez River

Jemez River Professional Review and Guide

"A beautiful day hike along the East Fork of the Jemez River. The trail does not show on some older maps. The hike is shown as 10 miles round- trip. If you can arrange a car shuttle between the two trailheads, the distance halves. If time or energy is short, do the hike from the Las Conchas trailhead. The eastern part of the hike is the most scenic.

Grassy meadows and cliffs line the river. Several footbridges cross the small river, at least until the next flood washes them away. The trail is very popular, particularly the last 2 miles before the Las Conchas trailhead in summer."

The trail is very pretty and lined with everything from tiny trees to towering, 100 foot pondersosa pines. Very pretty hike. The final destination is is pretty as well, with the river meandering through the valley. However, and this is a BIG however, there were probably 50 kids that came and went through the area (and our campsite) who were going to go cliff jumping up the river. Apparently the highway is only 1/2 mile from there and they wade up the river to get there. They were very annoying and nearly ruined our experience. So I strongly advise not trying to camp there in the summer.
