Stable Mesa

Stable Mesa Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The most scenic drive in the Jemez leads to the western base of Schoolhouse Mesa. The hike takes you to the western rim of its southern neighbor, Stable Mesa. From there you can explore windows and shelter caves in a mile-long pumice ridgeline. An optional extension ventures out to the ruins of an ancient pueblo and a historic logging camp.

FACILITIES: Fishing access; paved path to riverside is suitable for campgrounds, and of course enough hiking
wheelchairs trails to lose yourself for days on end.
SPECIAL COMMENTS: High waters occasionally force the closure of the parking area and submerge the log bridge. Rains may also increase two contiguous mesas flanking the west side.
chances for rock falls and land-slides."

Main thing I wanted to say is location per Trailfinder inTrails.com (near Belen NM) is not right. Book is right. Also this hike is not really a San Diego Canyon hike. That is the big canyon Highway 4 runs through. This hike goes up to a saddle between Guadalupe Mesa to the south and Virgin Mesa to the north with nice views of San Diego Canyon to the east and Virgin Canyon (and mesas beyond) to the west. Need to be careful with this hike. It's not on a trail and there's a lot of unstable rocks. I fell and broke my arm on this hike. I'm not being critical of the book, just warning folks to be careful. Pictures are at DavidLewisPhoto.com (couldn't upload from mac)
