Joe Skeen Campground

Joe Skeen Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Within the confines of the El Malpais National Conservation area are several geologic attractions. The name El Malpais is the Spanish term meaning “the badlands,” which is appropriate because of the extremely barren and dramatic lava field that covers much of the park’s area. From the time you leave I-40, you will begin to see the large lava bed, which extends 35 miles and ends about 18 miles south of La Ventana Natural Arch.

Joe Skeen Campground lacks the beauty of many of the campgrounds in this book; however, the area around this camp is teeming with magnificent natural beauty. Joe Skeen is a no-frills roadside campground. Even though it is a roadside camp, most evenings will be quiet with very little traffic."
