Mogollon Baldy

Mogollon Baldy Professional Review and Guide

"A two- to three-day backpacking trip to remote mountaintop fire lookout in the heart of the Gila Wilderness, located about 85 miles northwest of Silver City. Best hiked during mid-May through October. Water is available at Bead, Hummingbird, Apache, Hobo, Little Hobo, and Blacktail Springs. Special attractions include lush high mountain forest, spectacular views, and isolation."

"The crest of the Mogollon Mountains presents spectacular vistas from rugged canyons to distant mountains. This route accesses the three highest peaks in the Wilderness with lots of open views created by the huge Whitewater-Baldy Fire. This is a popular route into the high country of the Mogollon Mountains.

The Crest Trail (182) has moderate use, with hikers in the summer and hunters in the fall. The views are magnificent. The peaks of the three baldies (Whitewater, Center, and Mogollon) are short walk-ups. The drive to the trailhead allows your vehicle to do the work of gaining elevation to this high mountain country. Virtually the entire crest and surrounding country was intensively burned in 2012."

"A 2- to 3-day backpack along a high mountain crest to a remote mountaintop fire lookout in the heart of the Gila Wilderness.

This hike follows the crest of the Mogollon Range, the highest range in not only the Gila Wilderness, but all of southern New Mexico except Sierra Blanca many miles east. Most of the trail lies above 10,000 feet, so prepare to do a little heavy breathing. Before the 300,000-acre Whitewater- Baldy Fire of 2012, the Sandy Point Trailhead was probably the most commonly used access point to the high country."
