"Like all good lookouts the lofty Black Mountain Lookout has a commanding view, with sweeping vistas across much of the Gila Wilderness. The historic structure is an interesting destination in its own right. With much of the elevation to 9,303-foot Black Mountain already gained at the trailhead the 4-mile hike to the lookout is a pleasurable highcountry ramble. The good but narrow pack trail is well maintained for the actively used lookout but not overdeveloped. Most of the route is located in contiguous roadless land outside the designated wilderness, but the country still retains its wild character." Read more

"A day hike to an active fire lookout tower on the summit of a high peak on the north side of the Gila Wilderness. Black Mountain lies on the north edge of the Gila Wilderness in splendid isolation. Despite having a good trail, maintained for the active fire lookout on the summit, and being a scenic area, the trail is little used. You’re unlikely to meet anyone except the look-out person during fire season. Some sources show the distance as 4 miles one way to the summit, but my GPS unit indicated 4.7 miles. You will pass four wire livestock gates in fences on this hike. Be sure to close them after you." Read more
