"A 20-mile paved highway that climbs from the Tularosa Basin desert to the lush forests of the Sacramento Mountains. The west flank of the Sacramento Mountains above Alamogordo is a towering wall of cliffs and steep slopes. The mountains rise a vertical mile from the Tularosa Valley floor to mountain summits south of Cloudcroft. The road from Alamogordo to Cloudcroft rises 4,300 feet, as noted in warning signs to truckers. The highway rapidly climbs through several life zones, from creosote bush and cacti at the bottom to spruce, fir, and aspen at Cloudcroft.

Special attractions: Sacramento Mountains, Lincoln National Forest, International Space Hall of Fame, Snow Canyon Ski Area, historic railroad, views, hiking, camping, fall color, cross-country skiing, and mountain biking.
