"Mount Taylor is an extinct volcano rising high above the surrounding lava fields near Grants, New Mexico. The mountain is part of a much larger volcanic field extending to Arizona in the west and to jagged volcanic necks, tall spires of hardened magma, to the east. The mountain was built by periodic eruptions occurring from 4 to 2 million years ago. At the end of this period, the peak stood much higher than at present. Subsequent eruptions were of the explosive type and the sideways blasts tore the mountain apart, creating a high-rimmed crater draining to the east."
