"The Bosque del Apache Wildlife Refuge is known for its winter concentrations of snow geese and sandhill cranes, but the refuge stretches from the Rio Grande to the desert summits to the west. The trip to Chupadera Peak shows the splendor of the desert sections of the refuge and offers an opportunity for a delightful winter hike in the sunshine. The trip to the peak crosses a broad creosote plain before entering a richly colored desert grassland where the 6,273-foot peak serves as the backdrop. The carefully designed trail leads to the summit where hikers are rewarded with a spectacular view of the Rio Grande rift."
