"In a state famous for its abundance of large Native American villages, Chaco Canyon holds the crown jewels. Visitors to the remains of multiple- story towns scattered along 6 miles of canyon floor are soon struck by the magical, mystical nature of the canyon. For whatever reason, the Ancestral Pueblo people, ancestors of the modern Pueblo groups living in New Mexico and Arizona, chose this canyon to build villages with hundreds of rooms."

Good loop trail that overlooks a few of the major ruins and visits Pueblo Alto and New Alto ruins on the mesa top. Also goes by Jackson's ladder which gives you some idea of the physical ability and agility of the inhabitants. The trail passes through a very narrow gap in the rocks so some amount of dexterity is required. Other than that, just carry lots of water because it can be very hot and dry with no shade at all on the mesa top.

This is a great trail with with a couple of short steep ups and downs. While you can just go to Pubelo Alto, we heartily recommend the loop. The trail is very clearly marked and it is almost impossible to get lost. In return for the extra miles of the loop, you get spectacular views as you walk the mesa rim. The Pueblo Alto ruins are worth the trip but the Penasco Blanco trail ruins are a bit more extensive.
If you go to Chaco Canyon, you should not miss the Penasco Blanco or this trail.
