Turkey Creek Hot Springs

Turkey Creek Hot Springs Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Well-watered canyon bottoms offer some relief from the unremitting heat on the sun-blasted slopes of the Gila Wilderness. The presence of water creates a riparian environment that seems heaven-sent in the middle of the desert. The canyon of Turkey Creek is particularly inviting, offering hikers a corridor to enter the southern Diablo Range in the Gila Wilderness.

Fed by springs—some of them hot—the flow in the canyon supports a tall canopy of broad-leafed trees. Most attractive is the white-trunked Arizona sycamore, which spreads its branches to create deep shade and provide welcome relief from the intense southern sun. Other portions of the canopy are formed by net-leafed hackberry, cottonwood, and western soapberry."

"Another remote hot spring in the Gila Wilderness of the Mogollon Mountains, requiring a difficult drive and hike to reach. Several fantastic bathing opportunities await you after the slow drive and 4-mile hike, however."

The trail was great, but pay very close attention to the fact that you leave the main trail and follow the creek. This portion of the hike is tricky and many times we had to back track in order to find our way without wading up the creek.
