Last Chance Canyon

Last Chance Canyon Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The story of how this canyon got its name is told so often that it just might contain a kernel of truth. Around 1881, a group of ranchers pursued Apache raiders into the Guadalupe Mountains and soon became lost amid the twisted canyons draining the southeast flank of the range.

After their canteens were empty, they rode from rim to rim, searching for water without finding a spring. With their horses almost spent, they spotted the limestone walls of yet another canyon—it was their last chance. According to the legend, the abundant springs they found there saved their lives, and they named the spot Last Chance Canyon."

There are lots of cool looking bright red beetles on the trail. What are they anyway?

Nice out and back trail. Took a little effort to find the start, and at one point the trail faded and I ended up on the wrong side of the stream. The majority of the trail is down inside the canyon near the stream. Once inside the canyon there is good scenery, feels secluded, clear running water.
