Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"The Walnut Canyon Vista Trail is a short hike through a typical Chihuahuan desert ecosystem to a viewpoint above Walnut Canyon, a twisting canyon that drains southeast to Whites City. Walnut Canyon is floored by a dry wash filled with rounded limestone boulders and cobbles. Small walnut trees scatter along the wash, giving the canyon its name. The Carlsbad Caverns Highway follows the canyon floor before climbing up a steep grade, locally called the Big Hill, below the trail’s overlook to a rounded plateau and the cavern."
