Did this as an out-and-back backpacking trip with my family and we had to move very slowly due to the cobblestone creek beds (hiking poles help a lot). There is plenty of scenery to keep you occupied during the walk--from canyon walls to name-that-prickly -plant or (as my daughter did) count the millipedes. The full moon rising over the canyon wall made the whole trip worth it. Campsites must be chosen carefully to avoid the aforementioned spiny plants and to be far enough off the trail and to stay out of potential flood areas in the arroyos. The trip was a great introduction to the Chihuahuan Desert and I left with a desire to know more about plants and animals that have to live in this harsh environment.
