"Burnt Mesa is a nearly level hike ending before a steep dropoff into a side canyon of Frijoles Canyon. The trail takes you past several rock mound sites, indicating Ancestral Puebloan life on the mesa. Burnt Mesa was one of the small Coalition Period (AD 1175–1325) pueblos, built on the Pajarito Plateau as people migrated from places north and west. It’s a beautiful fall hike, and in summer a great hike for seeing wildflowers and birds. Do not disturb or remove any artifacts, pottery, rocks, plants, or wildlife. Dogs not permitted." Read more
