Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge

Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge Professional Review and Guide

"Valle de Oro, the Southwest’s first urban wildlife refuge, is billed as an oasis for both wildlife and people. Located 5 miles south of downtown Albuquerque and within a 30-minute drive for half the state’s population, the former dairy farm formally received approval for refuge status from the U.S. Department of the Interior in 2012.

Since then the managing agency, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has been scrambling to finalize the purchase of the 570-acre property—along with its substantial water rights. Projects are also underway to develop the land for recreation while restoring the environment for the benefit of wildlife."
