This loop hike takes you through part of the Rio Grande bosque, the riverside riparian zone that contains a wide variety of water-loving plant and animal life. From the parking area, take the access trail directly west across the bridge over the riverside drain. The riverside trail starts here as a loop that can be walked either direction. Several short spurs lead to the river. After walking the loop, return to the parking area via the access trail. The bosque, partly wooded with cottonwood trees and partly open sand flats, is a fall and winter stop for migrating waterfowl, including sandhill cranes, Canada geese, and several types of ducks. Year-round residents include beaver, coyotes, and raccoons.
