Chavez Canyon-Chama River Canyon Wilderness

Chavez Canyon-Chama River Canyon Wilderness Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A cross-country day hike into a Utah-style red-rock slot canyon. Although part of this hike is off-trail, most of it is quite easy. It takes you up a small tributary of the Chama River into a narrow sandstone slot canyon.

The area, part of the Chama River Canyon Wilderness, is only lightly visited overall. Because this is not an improved trail, it sees minimal use. This is not an official Forest Service trail and not maintained in any way. Part of the drive to the trailhead follows the Chama River where it has cut a broad, scenic canyon into thick layers of red and buff-colored sandstone."
