Monksville Reservoir

Monksville Reservoir Professional Review and Guide

"Enjoy raptors, bouldered shorelines, rock faces, and pretty scenery at this reservoir. For a nice, long paddle and some great scenery, visit the 505 acre Monksville Reservoir, which encircles Long Pond Ironworks State Park like a giant horseshoe. Both launch sites have well-maintained portable toilets, and a grassy picnic area can be found on Beech Road next to the boat rental concession. Huge boulders and interesting rock faces line the shores south of the Greenwood Lake Turnpike bridge. White birches seem particularly abundant around the lake, contrasting sharply against dark evergreens and lush forest. Ducks, geese, and other waterfowl can be found around the lake in the protected coves. This reservoir has a good population of cormorants and gulls in summer. Eagles, several species of hawks, and vultures frequent the skies over the lake, and a variety of woodland birds will be seen all along the shores throughout your paddle. Large coves in the southern half provide interesting pockets of scenery and wildlife. Along the western side, Horse Pond Mountain rises sharply to a height of 400 feet with some impressive rock faces."
