Mahlon Dickerson Reservation Pine Swamp Loop Trail

Mahlon Dickerson Reservation: Pine Swamp Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This hike through swamp and upland crosses streams and seeps, and passes through tunnels of mountain laurel, encountering a lot of critter tracks in winter and plenty of variety to keep Fido interested and cool.

Hike downhill through deciduous woods and cross a creek, part of the Rockaway River drainage. Tributaries of three watersheds originate from this 3300-acre reservation: the Musconetcong, which flows west to the Delaware River; the Wallkill, which runs north to the Hudson; and the Rockaway, which flows southeast to Newark Bay. There’s plenty of water to keep your dog cool. American basswood grows in the upland part of the trail. In spring, its blossoms perfume the woods."
