Horse Pond Mountain Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"If you haven’t been to this area for a while, you may be surprised to see the body of water that’s suddenly appeared. It’s the Monksville Reservoir, created in 1988 to serve northern New Jersey in times of drought. Because it fills the recreational needs of fishermen and boaters, it’s now part of Monksville Recreation Area and Long Pond Ironworks State Park. The land surrounding the 500-acre reservoir also offers excellent trails and great lookouts for hikers.
Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended because the trail leading to the top of Horse Pond Mountain is very rocky. There are two opportunities to appreciate the vastness of this 500-acre reservoir. The first is from the western shore, which is a closeup; the second, from an open area just below the summit, provides a panoramic view."
