Island Beach State Park Trails

Island Beach State Park Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The best time to explore this barrier island is between Labor Day and Memorial Day, when the crowds are gone and parking is plentiful. During spring and winter months, dress warmly because the breezes off the ocean can make the temperature seem quite chilly.

Binoculars will come in handy for zooming in on a few of the 240 species of birds that frequent the area; among them are three on the endangered species list—the black skimmer, least tern, and piping plover. You’ll feel the salt spray from the waves breaking onshore, and the hike will lead you to a fine view of the Barnegat Lighthouse, built in 1858."

Great bike ride flat paved road (about 18 mi round trip)and if you ride bike into park there is no charge (free parking right at entrance).Even though road is flat the ride can be challanging due to wind (mostly from south). There are a few hiking trails on the bay side but no long trails for hiking, but walking on the long open beach is a great workout or easy stroll. I also launch my kayak on the Barneget bay form the park (2 launch sites) and it's a great place to paddle. New Jersey Seniors can get FREE entrance pass for all state parks (application available on their website).
