Wharton State Forest Goshen Pond Campground

Wharton State Forest: Goshen Pond Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The physical distance between Atsion Family Campground (see page 149) and Goshen Pond Campground is only a mile, but the differences between the two campgrounds are enormous. Goshen’s amenities are few, its only nod to development being a water pump and a few outhouses. The campground, whose sites are walk-in except for two, consists of open sites among the trees, which offer a wonderful view of the night sky. Enjoy the isolation under the stars of New Jersey’s Pinelands National Reserve. Goshen Pond sits by the Upper Mullica River, along a popular canoe route.

It’s popular with groups and with horse campers because of its spaciousness and openness. There are outhouses and water pumps on-site but no showers or flushing toilets. Swimming in the Mullica River is prohibited. Campers need not worry, however, about being dirty after a long canoe trip."

The campsite themselves are pretty well worn. If you're looking for the 'backpacking experience,' this ain't it. It is comfy, though, with its sugar sand and pygmy pitch pine needles. When you hike, you'll also find acres of blueberries. Delicious. The trails are pretty well marked, for the most part. We got misdirected once or twice. During warmer weather, wear gaiters, with Permethrin if you got 'em. Last time was an impromptu overnighter and I had chigger bites for days. Also, the sand is tough to walk through. You'll use muscles you forgot you had.

The apartment building I live in has more elevation that Wharton State Forest, so...

I didn't give it a higher rating for the rough use of the campsites, and because a good deal of the park is multi-use for 4X4's, ATV's, horses, and mountain bikes.
