Batsto River

Batsto River Professional Review and Guide

"Much of the runable length of the Batsto River lies within walking distance of the Mullica River, which might lead one to assume that the two rivers look alike. Not so. The Batsto’s marshland is different from the Mullica’s. It has fewer exposed sandy banks, and it passes through an extensive cedar forest.

The Batsto probably has more variety than any other river in the Pine Barrens. Of the four that flow through the Wharton State Forest, it is the least accessible, so it is preferable for people who seek solitude. Additionally, there is almost no wood debris. The sole negative factor is the crossing of Batsto Lake. Because the lake is artificial and shallow in many places, the crossing can be tough in a head wind unless one can feel one’s way along the original river channel."

Tom Talalaj. This is a cool trip. Wife and I camped overnight at lower forge along the way. If you are quiet, you can spook ducks all day. We put in at hamptons furnace, it feels weird leaving your vehicle out there, so we brought a friends junker. When we came back days later it was fine though. This is similar to the mullica river, without the enjoyable beaver dams. Mullica you can leave your car at the Atsion office, which is alot safer. In early november when we went, there were on a couple of tents at lower forge, and one was a hiker. I only saw one guy on the water while paddleing. If this is close to you, do it, these tight rivers are a lot of fun. The width is only 1-2 canoe lengths, and it is quite winding. Thomas Talalaj

Batsto River is great - do it. In summer of 2005 I paddled with my 10 year old from Quaker Bridge to Batsto Lake renting a canoe from Bel Haven. The river is clear, water clean and beautiful, and my 10 year basically a novice was able to take over and steer at any time. On a summer weekday we saw 1 other canoe and very few people. The river is generally shaded so did not get hot. The only caustion is Batsto Lake in the afternoon when the wind picks up can be a trudge if you're not prepared to paddle consistnetly and in synch. We'll do this every chance we get when we're in NJ [from CA and visit family alternate years].
