Hackensack River and Meadowlands

Hackensack River and Meadowlands Professional Review and Guide

"Observe wading and marsh birds, peregrine falcons, ospreys, and more as you paddle through brackish tidal marshes. You’re probably thinking, “Secaucus? This is supposed to be a book on good, quiet paddling sites.” You may think it is crazy to suggest paddling anywhere in this highly industrialized, overly populated, and cacophonous area. For those living nearby, the Hackensack River and Meadowlands offer one of the few spots to paddle within a reasonable distance—and it’s a wildlife haven and beautiful paddle to boot. Paddlers are starting to come here from far away to visit this magnificent estuary. It also helps us realize how important it is to protect such precious environments, both for the wildlife and for public enjoyment. The Hackensack River is a few hundred yards wide here and, with nothing but open salt marshes all around, can churn up pretty well on a windy day. Keep alert to changes in weather and observe the same caution as you would on a large lake."
