Ringwood State Park Shepherd Lake Trail

Ringwood State Park: Shepherd Lake Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Shepherd Lake, a 74-acre, spring-fed lake located in the heart of the Ramapo Mountains, is only one of the delights along this hike. While meandering through a tiny section of Ringwood State Park, you’ll encounter a lot of wildlife. You’ll also be within walking distance of Skylands Manor, a reproduction of the Jacobean mansions built in the English countryside four hundred years ago, and Skylands, the state’s official botanical garden.

Look up and you’ll see tall, stately oak, maple, and beech. Look down and chances are you’ll spot a rabbit or raccoon. Plan on being on the trail early in the day; if the weather’s warm, and if the lifeguards are on duty, you may opt for a refreshing swim after the hike. Or if you want to fish, trout, largemouth bass, sunfish, and pickerel are plentiful; a license is required."

I would have given this hike zero stars if it would post that way. I don't know if the authors of this hike are colorblind or dyslexic. Where the red and green trails separate, the instructions say to take red trail to the left. The red trail actually goes right, and the green trail goes left. We opted for dyslexic and got sent way out of our way. we we lost until we came to a fire road and a jogger directed us back to Ringwood Manor. The book went right in the trash when we got home.

We went on 4/6 with about 5 cubscouts (age 7) and hiked the Orange Blaze trail. It is a great trail for kids. It was the 1st hike for 4 of the 5 children and they all completed it without any problems and had a great time.

We had a very nice hike on a cold and cloudy day. The views would have been nicer with some sun. The climbs and descents were just hard enough to make it interesting and give you a good workout. The botanical Gardens were a pleasure to walk thru. A Late spring day needs a hike thru them.
