Ringwood State Park: Shepherd Lake Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Shepherd Lake, a 74-acre, spring-fed lake located in the heart of the Ramapo Mountains, is only one of the delights along this hike. While meandering through a tiny section of Ringwood State Park, you’ll encounter a lot of wildlife. You’ll also be within walking distance of Skylands Manor, a reproduction of the Jacobean mansions built in the English countryside four hundred years ago, and Skylands, the state’s official botanical garden.
Look up and you’ll see tall, stately oak, maple, and beech. Look down and chances are you’ll spot a rabbit or raccoon. Plan on being on the trail early in the day; if the weather’s warm, and if the lifeguards are on duty, you may opt for a refreshing swim after the hike. Or if you want to fish, trout, largemouth bass, sunfish, and pickerel are plentiful; a license is required."
