Tour of Tewksbury

Tour of Tewksbury Professional Review and Guide

"You'll ride on some of the prettiest country lanes in the state, stop at a general store for some fresh-brewed coffee and wonder why, in the past, you traveled all the way to Vermont and New Hampshire to admire their classic country landscapes when equally touching ones were right here in New Jersey.

The tour commences in Oldwick, a picturesque old village of antiques and shops and restored country homes. First settled in the mid-eighteenth century, Oldwick was originally known as New Germantown.

Things to see: Village of Oldwick, Oldwick General Store, Village of Mountainville, Mountainville General Store, Hunterdon County farm area."

The route is hilly, some quite strenuous but it is mostly shaded and there are hollows with running streams that make it all worthwhile. The map is not well marked, I never did find the Cokesbury Road, though I did find the Cokesbury-Califon Road that we could have taken. I recommend a detour to Califon (its a long down hill but be aware, that what goes down must go up again, see comments about River Road below) , the bridge in town is cool and the run along River Road is special. River Road after a few miles becomes a dirt road and being on road bikes we did not chance it. We doubled back and at the first intersection went up the truly huge hill and when we came to an intersection we went right, following our noses until we eventually found Water Street which is identified on the map. All told we added about five miles to the tour, lots more hills, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. If you plan out this route in advance and carry the map with you, all is well.
