Sount Mountain Reservation: Hemlock Falls Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Thanks to the Sierra Club and the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs, the yellow-blazed Lenape Trail will eventually cover 30 miles and link dozens of county, municipal, and historical areas. This hike, open only to foot traffic and cross-country skiing, begins on the first completed segment of the trail at the western corner of the South Mountain Reservation.
The trail rambles over the same land George Washington surveyed during the Revolution, when he realized the mountain range we know today as the Watchungs would offer his troops perfect cover from the British. You’ll be crossing many scenic streams, where you’ll see water tumbling over boulders. Hemlock Falls creates an impressive cascade, especially after a heavy rain or snowmelt. There are also scenic overlooks and dense woods chock-full of plants and wildlife."
