Watchung Sierra Sampler Professional Review and Guide
"Don’t be put off by the overdeveloped nature of this county park. With several miles of trails, you have plenty of opportunities to lose yourself among the hardwoods and conifers that flavor so much of the domain. A couple of ponds, a long, narrow lake (where oddly shaped erratics decorate its shoreline), and the well-preserved remnants of a mill town–cum– resort community contribute to the delights of the hike. Other highlights include the diverse bird populations that thrive around water holes, and herds of deer that chomp through the woods."
--Christopher & Catherine Brooks, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: New York City (Menasha Ridge Press).
This is a very pleasant, well marked, and well kept trail. It was also really easy to follow with the trail map provided at the entrance (or the one online). There are ups and downs, nothing too steep, but hiking boots would be appropriate for stability over a few rocky areas. The cave is worth seeing, and so is the beautiful lookout point on the white 'LL' trail. Picnic benches at point #36 make a great lunch stop. Hikes of various lengths can be worked out here. Portible bathrooms by the upper parking lot on Michigan Rd. are a bonus. Enter before 9 AM for free!
Great family trail. There are well marked trails and can easily make it a short or long trip.
