Mahlon Dickerson Reservation Pine Swamp Trail

Mahlon Dickerson Reservation: Pine Swamp Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A longtime resident of Morris County, Mahlon Dickerson (1770–1853) owned local iron mines, spoke several languages, and was a recognized botanist. Considering that he also served as governor, U.S. senator, and Secretary of the Navy, it’s no wonder that the largest park in Morris County—Mahlon Dickerson Reservation—was named in his honor in 1967.

The trails within these 1500 wooded acres are situated along old logging roads where you’ll have ample opportunity to see impressive stands of spruce, azalea, mountain laurel, and rhododendron. Although there aren’t any views on the main part of this hike, a short detour at the end will bring you to an overlook with a view of Lake Hopatcong, 9 miles in the distance. At one point, you’ll also be standing at the highest elevation in Morris County at 1395 feet above sea level. The park has facilities for overnight tent and trailer camping as well as a full schedule of events, including naturalist-led hikes and campfire demonstrations."
