Schooley’s Mountain Boulder Gorge Loop Trail

Schooley’s Mountain: Boulder Gorge Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is an exciting hike along a dramatic glacial stream gorge with tons of boulders that have tumbled down the mountain. Your dog will enjoy the wet scents and sensations of the Electric Brook where, even in summer, there is water. A lot of little waterfalls and quiet pools will keep Fido busy, and the hike down the mountain is easy on the Patriots’ Path.

Cross the street and enter the woods at the wooden signpost for Patriots’ Path, a white-blazed trail that traverses much of Morris County, connecting many federal, state, county, and municipal green spaces. Patriots’ Path immediately bears left, heading slowly up Schooley’s Mountain. At 0.5 mile, go left onto the unblazed Boulder Gorge Trail on a steep downhill."

The loop trail is a great and easy walk in the woods. The boulder trail gets very steep and might be difficult to some. Our dog is small and needed some help up the slope. Was worth the trip.

Semi-difficult climb. The trail is not covered with dense forest, so it is easy if you are feeling like a trail blazer to go off on your own. The hike up was a 3/5 difficulty. the regular trail along the water is a breeze, but great for dogs.

Very pretty, if short hike. The Boulder Gorge trail is now clearly marked at its start - but has a steep downhill that could be difficult for some. For no apparent reason the blazes end just before you cross the dirt road (actually someone's driveway.) A sign says that the "bridge is out" - but it's not too hard to cross the stream and continue on the (at this point) unmarked trail heading upstream. Here the hike it the prettiest - with waterfalls along the way. A blaze on a wooden pole- that identifies the trail back to the parking area - is easy to miss.
