Sussex Branch Warbasse Junction to Augusta Trail

Sussex Branch: Warbasse Junction to Augusta Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This section of the 20-mile Sussex Branch Trail follows the Paulins Kill, offering your dog several opportunities for a drink and a swim at each bridge crossing. This well-maintained, popular path is cool and easy on Fido’s feet.

From the southern trailhead, walk across County Route 663 and take the Paulinskill Valley Trail for 225 feet to the trail junction in the woods. This is Warbasse Junction, an old-time crossroads of two defunct railroad beds, now the Sussex Branch Trail and Paulinskill Valley Trail. Turn left onto the Sussex Branch. There is no sign here, just a wooden bench. Cross over the Kill on a wide bridge—the first of six on this hike—where Fido can take a dip in the stream."

This trail is well marked and soft under foot. There is an outhouse at the trailhead. As the trail guide states you cross the road from the parking area. You come to a crossroads and make a left. This is where the Paulinskill and Sussex Branch intersect, thus Warbasse Junction. I will be back at least 3 more times to try the Sussex Branch going south and the Paulinskill going both directions. This portion of the Sussex branch travels through woods, farm country and some sububan areas. It was peaceful and pleasant. Nothing breathtaking in the scenery to report. Up toward Newton there is considerable traffic noise from route 15. Even though we stayed on the trail, my dog picked up a good many ticks.

A beautiful hike along a very well maintained rail to trail park. The second section had a wonderful feeling of isolation and a beautiful NJ woodland scene. At the time we went crossed paths with several well mannered horse back riders but no ill-mannered cyclists which as dog owners make our local rail to trail a difficult exercise.

The trail goes through several interesting rail cuts in which the rock cliffs tower over the hiker.
