Hacklebarney State Park Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is a kid’s paradise! Our first trip here was in the dead of winter, when the tips of large boulders poked through a blanket of freshly fallen snow. Our boys couldn’t resist scampering from one boulder to another and, to tell the truth, neither could we.

Situated along the Black River in a gorge of unusual beauty, Hacklebarney State Park lies primarily in a glacial valley. According to legend, it acquired its strange name from a local iron mine worker who persisted in heckling a foreman named Barney Tracey. Over time “heckle” Barney became “hacklebarney.” Sturdy shoes are recommended."
