Black River Trail

Black River Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Take a pinch of iron-mining history, combine that with a highly scenic river, add a few successional fields, a conifer-covered hillside, and the possibility of seeing wildlife, and what do you have? The makings of a tremendous hike along the Black River Trail. This one manages the neat feat of carrying you deep into a wilderness and back in time, all within the confines of a well-populated suburban community. A cabin ruin and hidden cascade add to the fun in a trek you are likely to savor long after its finish."

Amazingly beautiful hike. But surely not for beginners. Need to be in shape. It is a rocky trail with steep ups and downs. But one of the most beautiful hikes i have ever gone to. The black river runs a little bit fast here but makes wonderful waterfalls and meditating spots. please do try it but be ready for a real endurance workout.

The boardwalk was closed on the day we took this trail, because about an inch of snow had fallen the night before and the park officials decided it was too slippery. But no matter - we walked across the parking lots and lawns to where the trail crossed the river, then went past the picnic area and up the hill into the woods. The trail directions got a bit ambiguous at that point, or things have changed a bit, or maybe I just got a bit befuddled, but for whatever reason, we wound up taking the wrong trail from the top of the hill. The one we took led us past St. Johnland, and thence to Old Dock Road, where we were able to pick up the trail at the Inn, and get back on track. Aside from that, it was quite a nice walk. The water views from the bluff (on the way back, when we found the correct trail) were great, even in winter, and the walk through the grounds of the hospital was a bit eerie. Not at all what one expects on a hike.
