Island Beach State Park

Island Beach State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Enjoy paddling near tidal marsh, freshwater wetlands, maritime forest, and one of the few undeveloped barrier island beaches along the Atlantic coast on this 10-mile stretch of paradise.

The first of two launch sites at Island Beach State Park, this provides access to the open bay and is a couple miles north of the Sedge Island area, where the other launch is located. To reach it from the Garden State Parkway, take Exit 98 from the local route to NJ 34 South. It becomes NJ 35. Continue on NJ 35 until it ends at the park entrance. Pick up a park map when you enter the park. Unfortunately, the map isn’t great, but since there is only one road through the park it is still useful."

Currents change with each tide and a nearby inlet creates very strong currents. On the western side of the islands, just outside the conservation zone, is Oyster Creek Channel, which receives a lot of boat traffic during the day and has strong currents that are produced when the tide goes out and water empties from the channels that cut between the islands. At times the water moves so fast it looks like a powerful stream. The currents can be especially strong during tides that occur when the moon is new and full. At low tide, sandbars emerge, sometimes making it impossible to paddle.
