Abandoned rail lines invite yet another opportunity for easy mountain biking through Southern New Hampshire, the countryside that for so long inspired the poet Robert Frost. Steel and wood bridges remain to guide you over water, and the state has built a tunnel under NH 101 to keep your trip safe and fluid. Ready for groups and families, trail surfaces are generally firm, and long lines-of-sight keep even over-energized riders perceptibly near. Trail Surface: Converted railroad bed: gravel and cinder.

This rail trail may have been a good ride five years ago. But in 2006, it''s an ATV paradise. With such a deep, loose sandy surface, and gas filled air, it wasn''t in any way suitable as a casual rail bed mountain bike ride. That it was rather flat didn''t matter. I cannot imagine anyone being able to make this 19.4 mile, point-to-point ride in three hours, as listed in the guide. We turned off onto the regular roads at around the 5-6 mile mark from the start point, and returned to the parking area at the Depot by way of good paved surface roads, away from the ATV''s and motorbikes. Perhaps there are more suitable entry points for this ride. Based on my experience, that''s at least 5 miles downtrail from Windham Depot. Or maybe starting on the other end would be best.

The rockingham rec. trail, also known as the railroad bed trail is an old railroad bed. it is boring if you go 10-15 mph but when you go over 25, it is fun, because it is pretty flat and straight. this trail is good for endurance traning.
