Mount Kearsarge, Winslow Trail

Mount Kearsarge, Winslow Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The climb of Mount Kearsarge from the Wilmot side is a great family hike, but requires more effort than most people expect. The rocky and root-bound trail almost immediately begins a moderate climb of the highest peak in Merrimack County. Proper footwear and adequate clothing are needed to protect from strong winds and changeable weather.

About two-thirds of the way to the summit, the trail eases a bit, allowing hikers to catch their breath and steal a quick glance through spruce and fir trees to the views that appear at their backs. Short of the summit, the rocky climb soon reaches a large boulder that guards extensive local vistas of King Ridge, New London, and Pleasant Lake with the Green Mountains of Vermont forming an impressive backdrop. Special attractions: A longer and less crowded route to a popular summit with fire tower views in all directions."

Trail shows signs of overuse. Was mostly ice from the half way marker up. Great views from the summit

I hiked this with my 7 year old son and we met several families with even younger children and also one with a visually disabled child! The trail is not without challenges though as it is steep and rocky in places, but this is also what makes it fun. At the top there is a fire tower. We climbed the tower, signed the guest book and chatted with the friendly fire warden.

Great short trail. Very moderate grade, great views with a nice open summit. We did hike in winter so it was a little icy.

The Mount Kearsarge, Winslow Trail can be hiked in one of two ways. If you want a could climbing work-out (moderate rate), you can take the Winslow Trail to the top of Kearsarge Mountain and then take a less strenous hike down the mountain by taking the Barlow Trail. Or you can do it the opposite way. Both trails start at the same location and they merge back together near the summit of Mount Kearsarge.
