Bear Notch Challenge

Bear Notch Challenge Professional Review and Guide

"With its 2 lanes arcing over the Mountains, the Kancamagus Highway is considered by many cyclists to be the ultimate road through the White Mountains. One challenging side trip is the steep climb to Cathedral Ledge (at 1.5 miles). There's a rewarding view back toward the Saco River plain from the top. Take time to pull out at the scenic overlooks.

Terrain: includes both quiet valley roads and a 1,400 foot climb in 5 miles through Bear Notch. Traffic/Safety: Rte. 302 can be busy, but it has a decent shoulder. West Side Rd. north of Cathedral Ledge has little shoulder and can be busy, but is usually quiet in the early morning. Pavement quality on the Kancamagus Hwy. varies, and summer traffic can include large recreation vehicles; use caution turning left to the covered bridge."
