Lake Solitude - Mount Sunapee Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Located on a shoulder of Mount Sunapee, Lake Solitude and White Ledge above it are among the most peaceful hiking destinations in southern New Hampshire. White Ledge offers an arguably superior view compared to the top of the mountain, which is not above tree line, and it is definitely more of a wilderness experience.

The summit is cluttered with two chairlift terminals, a sizable lodge, and several smaller buildings. During certain summer weekends, the Mount Sunapee ski resort offers chairlift rides, crowding the summit with people who have either ridden up or hiked up a ski trail. Unless you need to stand on top of the mountain, White Ledge is the preferable destination, particularly with a dog."

great trail with Rollie. We were both ready to be done with it though about halfway down the decent.
I hiked this trail after reading about it in "Best Hikes with Dogs in NH and Vermont" as I was looking for a good day hike with my Australian Shepherd. The hike was everything it was advertised to be: A moderate climb, dense woods at times, plenty of water (for the dog) and some breath-taking views. We started our hike at 8:30am on a Saturday morning and going up we barely saw another person (one person to be exact). This allowed us to hike at our own pace, take pit stops and enjoys some awesome views when we came across them. By 11:30am we had made it to the summit and hung out for a bit at the Mt. Sunappe Summit lodge while eating some lunch. The hike down follows the same trail so it wasn't quite as exciting and by noon the trail began to see some others hikers. On more than one occasion we ran into fairly large parties of day hikers which was fine but something to think about. Keep in mind that the weather was perfect and the views were endless so it should be surprising that other people might want to enjoy the trail. In all it was a great day hike and if you go early enough you're likely not to see another person (especially later in the fall).
