Mount Monadnock Trail

Mount Monadnock Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"It’s almost the law in New England; at some point in time, you must hike Mount Monadnock. In fact, Monadnock is said to be the second most frequently hiked mountain in the world, after Japan’s Mount Fiji. What’s the draw? This barren peak in southern New Hampshire may not be as lofty as others farther north, but the views from its top are nothing short of stunning. Hit this peak on a clear day, and you’ll have jaw-dropping views into all six New England states.

The trail in summer can be a rock-and-root-strewn menace, a twisted ankle waiting to happen. A good snow cover can smooth out the ruts and cover the rocks. But-and it’s a big but-the top stretches can get pretty icy. Ask about snow conditions. You can consult with a staff person, usually available on weekends throughout the winter or call the state park office. Better yet, chat with other hikers, especially the die-hard campers, who pitch a tent at the on-site campground (open year-round) and spend the days hiking, climbing, skiing, and generally honing their outdoor skills. Not a bad way to go. Bring your camping gear, pick the best day to hike Monadnock, and spend the rest of the time hiking some of the more than 40 miles of trails that criss-cross through the park."

"The backcountry ski trail network of Monadnock State Park offers gentle ski touring through a classic New England forest landscape around the base of the mountain. The tour to Gilson Pond is a highlight. Old Ski Path and Red Spot Trail high on Mount Monadnock are challenging historic ski routes on the mountain."
