A treasure trove of geological potholes and rock specimens in a wild setting. The state has suspended active maintenance of this site and no longer identifies it with a sign, but the area remains open to the public. Walking into the rocky woodland leads quickly past exposed bedrock sections and, later, to unusual natural potholes, the reason it’s called a geological park. The convoluted terrain of Gilsum holds geological surprises, and this trail highlights several. Over millions of years of geological activity, rock plates in the area pressed and folded over each other, creating sharp ledges. Water erosion also gouged out potholes in softer rock.
