A brief climb to a lovely view past Echo Lake into Franconia Notch. Artists Bluff is a rocky outcropping at the northern end of Franconia Notch State Park. It is a minor hump on a minor peak called Bald Mountain (2,340 feet), but it’s major fun, especially for small children and for those who are not physically up to a bigger ascent. It is the perfect introduction to hiking in the White Mountains. The Short Circuit Trail begins in a grove of hardwoods but quickly leaves the trees, crossing a field. Follow the faded red discs on stakes to find the point where the trail reenters the woods at the far end of the clearing.
