This is an easy pedal along the shores of two lakes, with an optional stop at the Enfield Shaker Village and Museum. The Shaker “Great Stone Dwelling” on the shore of Mascoma Lake is a reminder that the Pilgrims were only the first in a long line of religious groups who built hopeful communities in New England. The Shakers are among the most interesting and most successful of nineteenth-century American communal societies.
